In this session I would like to focus on ways of teaching that are group-friendly and can engage our young learners in various
ways. Having fun, playing, moving around and making noise certainly are natural ways of learning for six- and seven-year-olds.
When they are well-managed, children can learn quite a lot through play, fun and movement. And not only the language, but also
how to work and behave in a group. We will look at practical ways of involving our students on many of those different levels.

Karolina Kotorowicz-Jasińska is a graduate from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University
in Lublin. Her teaching practice began for good when she was still a student and
discovered that teaching English is great fun. Since then she has had an opportunity
to work with different age groups at all proficiency levels. For many years Karolina
was doing her best to unravel the mysteries of ELT methodology to students of the
English departments in Lublin and Warsaw. She was a PhD student at Zakład
Metodyki Nauczania Języka Angielskiego of MCSU and she is now busy working on
her doctoral dissertation on academic listening and note-taking skills. Some time
ago her career took an unexpected turn and so she became the English teacher of
a bunch of lovable and smart kids at Canadian School of Warsaw.

Do we teach English or do we teach Exams? Sometimes that’s a grey area, students aren’t sure how to process information or manipulate lexical meaning to fit a particular part of the Matura, especially that the format of the exam changes from 2015. Well, sometimes we need to focus on that faster, give clearer connections between the language and the exam and show them why what we're doing in class today matters for the future.

In our session we’d like to show how to work effectively with large groups of young students. We’ll devote some time to the
micro-level tricks of the trade, such as drilling grammar and vocabulary with songs and stories, or activating the students
as a whole group with TPR or short dramas. We’ll also consider macro-level teaching strategies, such as organizing
whole-class-friendly learning and balancing between learner-centred and teacher-guided classroom.
