The nine lives of grammar
In the last forty years or so, grammar has – quite possibly – occupied all possible positions in the process of teaching a foreign language, with some approaches giving it absolute prominence, others excluding it altogether. Yet even when not there, grammar has always managed to squeeze into the classroom, just like a cat. There is something strangely appealing about grammar, and in this session, we will yet again fall under its (his? her?) charm.
In particular, we will examine in some detail grammar’s latest life-form, namely, consciousness raising, and try to see why all vital grammar points must have multiple lives in the classroom. We will spend some time reflecting upon the way coursebook organization creates opportunities for multiple exposures to the same grammar points, as well as look at some very practical ways of structuring recycling in a gimnazjum English classroom, all with the view to facilitating noticing and re-noticing.

What’s the point of reading, anyway?
Just when we thought we knew what to do with written texts in the classroom, researchers are telling us to think again. Current research into reading concerns, among others, how good readers actually read, i.e. what it is that they do with their eyes – in both L1 and L2. The implication for the language teacher is that strategy training of the familiar skimming-scanning kind is not a particularly helpful way of working with written texts, at least in the general English classroom.
Accordingly, this talk will look at two main reasons for exploiting written texts, and neither of them have much to do with reading! Keeping in mind the specific needs of Matura students, I will suggest a variety of lively, practical ways of using texts to drive language acquisition forward.
Examples will be taken from Matura Masters, the new Macmillan course for upper-secondary learners.
