The case for or against grammar?
Having analysed the examination standards, many gimnazjum teachers seem to wonder: ‘How much grammar do I need to teach for the sake of the exam?’ The specifications issued by Centralna Komisja Egzaminacyjna do not seem to put much impact on students’ knowledge of structures and rules, or indeed on linguistic accuracy. Yet it somehow doesn’t feel right to dispose of grammar altogether, especially that, although condemned by many professionals, it is still very much expected by learners.

Finding a golden means in this situation involves changing the question from ‘how much grammar should I teach’ into ‘what attitude to grammar should I adopt?’
In this session, my aim will be to show how – when teaching grammar to gimnazjum learners - we can give priority to meaning over form, promote acquisition by meaning-focused use, and create opportunities in the classroom to DO thing with language. In short: how to look at grammatical structures predominantly as an instrument of communication and a way to convey meaning in various situations and contexts.
Making connections - how to help your students engage with texts
As a teacher, you have a crucial role in connecting the students and the book they are using and this is most critical when you’re dealing with reading and listening texts. The coursebook contains dynamic and interesting material and there are plenty of inventive ideas on the page itself, so - hopefully - the class will find the texts and activities engaging and stimulating.
However, some students do not always relate enthusiastically to things they have to do in school, and of course there are days when they seem to have no energy at all.

On days like these, it’s useful to have one or two tricks up your sleeve to help them rediscover their enjoyment of the learning process.
In this talk, we will consider how to enhance the book’s great ideas with techniques that engage your students’ curiosity, exploit what they already know and generally help them look at or listen to the texts - in other words connect - in a fresh and inquisitive way.
