When you teach a group of lively 11-12 year olds, you may be excused to think that your first priority is to get them to work as a group. If so, your first reaction to personalisation might justifiably be lukewarm at best: isn’t an individual approach a luxury we simply cannot afford?!
Well, my main point in this session will be that personalisation is not an additional extra, but – if administered sensibly – a most useful management tool in the hands of a language teacher.

Personalisation need not mean drafting umpteen lesson plans every time, to suit the unique needs of every single student taken alone! Rather, it can consist in devising activity sequences that will provoke different, personal responses in the learners.
To see how this might work in practice, we’ll look at a number of task scenarios and activity samples to do with teaching grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and the core language skills.
Recycling that makes sense
If you deal with teenagers, you are more than aware that teaching this age group is not the easiest in the world. Now with the new gimnazjum exam in English the situation seems doubly difficult. On the one hand, students and their parents still expect you to teach in such a way that teenage brains do not switch off. On the other hand, you are supposed to prepare the very same students for their first important exam, which requires a lot from them in terms of linguistic competence and concentration.
Can the two approaches be married somehow? Can you seriously revise for the exam while ensuring that your students’ brains are switched on and receptive enough? If you are interested in the answers to the above questions, come to this practical session. You will leave with some ready-made recipes for how to recycle language and with lots of hints on how to revise in a truly teenager-friendly way.
Text–rich teaching
Working with a text is for me one of the most enjoyable classroom activities.

Whether it is reading or listening practice, I try to exploit each and every text to the maximum: to interest my students in a particular subject, to give them food for thought or to help them with their writing skills. More importantly, however, my students read and listen a lot to gain confidence when dealing with texts on their own. In this way I sincerely hope to turn them into more committed readers or listeners of English.
In this session I would like to share with you some new research results on reading and listening. I will also present a number of techniques based on current approaches to teaching these two skills, as well as some activities which make reading and listening less solitary but more collaborative. Most of these techniques will focus on while-reading and post-reading, to encourage you to exploit texts to a greater extent and help the learners enjoy reading and listening just a wee bit more
