The process of learning a foreign language is both an exciting and anxiety-inducing experience, perhaps particularly so at the tender age of 10 – 12. Perched uncomfortably across two crucial life stages, the majority of upper primary learners still crave the predictability and orderliness of the lower primary classroom, simultaneously beginning to look for ways of expressing their individuality, also in and through language, a feature so typical of adolescents.

All this places upon language teachers the necessity to mix familiar exercise types with activities that will provide the learners with the opportunity to make new language their own to a greater degree than they were used to in their lower primary years.
In the course of the session, we will take a closer look at how various types of personalization activities may be successfully woven into the teaching/learning process in a non-threatening, inspiring and pedagogically useful manner. Personalizing the process of language learning, even at this relatively early stage has a lot to offer, for personalization, if only gently done, does it gently.
A person-centred approach in the language classroom
In this practical session, we will consider the magic of language and reasons why classroom language teaching does not always succeed. We’ll establish the basic tenets of a person-centred approach and explore its implications in the modern English classroom, through a range of activities which focus on respect, individuality, diversity, learner input, thinking skills, responsibility and choice. Examples will be taken from Macmillan’s New Inspiration 1 and 2, as well as Inspiration 3 and 4.

As a research field, methodology has arrived, I believe, at a stage where old concepts, long taken for granted, are being critically revisited.

One of these is the teaching of reading, inspired to some extent by the latest technological developments.
It so happens that the Internet has changed our conception and perception of text, possibly modifying our reading patterns as well. This in turn has called into question the traditional division of the skill of reading into minor subskills.
In the session, we will look at relatively old issues concerning the teaching of reading through a pair of brand new binoculars and discuss ways of teaching this vital skill for both classroom/exam and ‘real-life’ purposes. Among other ways, we will look at the “odd couple relationship” of reading and vocabulary and investigate ways of personalizing the reading process. Mastering reading is by no means an easy feat, but definitely one worth the trouble, now possibly even more than before.
